🎲 Fall-Themed Articulation Resource: Playing Cards for /F & F Blends/ and /L & L Blends/
We’re wrapping up this month’s fall speech therapy mini bundle with a playful, no-prep activity your students will actually ask to play: Fall Articulation Playing Cards for /F & F Blends/ and /L & L Blends/
These fall articulation activities are designed to make high-frequency practice feel fun while still supporting IEP goals. Think of them as a seasonal twist on traditional articulation flashcards — engaging, colorful, and completely no-prep.
🧠 Why It Works
Consistent articulation progress requires repetition and variety — and that’s exactly what these articulation games for speech therapy provide. Instead of running through word lists in a drill format, students get repeated practice in a game they already love.
This fall-themed articulation activity gives students:
- Structured articulation practice targeting /F/ and /L/ in initial, medial, final, and mixed positions.
- Seasonal fall articulation worksheets and vocabulary cards to keep things fresh.
- A flexible card-game format that works across groups, centers, and home practice.
With these articulation playing cards, students get the trials they need — without the monotony.
💬 Why This Matters in Therapy
As SLPs, we know that articulation activities for SLPs must balance repetition with engagement. Students need hundreds of trials for learning, but they also need a reason to stay motivated. That’s why fall-themed speech therapy activities for articulation are so powerful — they combine evidence-based practice with seasonal fun.
With this freebie, you can:
- Use the articulation cards for /F/ and /L/ in small groups or mixed groups.
- Incorporate them into fall articulation games like Go Fish, War, or Memory.
- Send them home as free articulation worksheets fall-themed for extra practice.
- Pair them with articulation word lists or other speech therapy articulation resources for even more structured support.

🎁 The Best Games to Play with Your Articulation Card Deck!
1. Go Fish 🎣
- Play just like the classic game!
- Example prompt: “Do you have a fall card?”
- Each time a student asks or answers, they practice saying the word (or use it in a sentence).
2. War ⚔️
- Divide the deck evenly.
- Each player flips a card at the same time.
- Highest “rank” card wins (you can assign ranks however you’d like — e.g., leaf beats roof, or simply higher number if you add numbers to cards).
- Students say their card 3x before comparing.
3. Memory / Concentration 🧠
- Place cards face-down in rows.
- Students take turns flipping two cards, saying the words on each.
- If they match, they keep the pair.
- Great for extra repetition and vocabulary building.
4. Articulation Snap 👏
- Shuffle and deal cards into one pile, flipping them quickly.
- When two of the same words appear, the first to call “Snap!” gets the pile.
- Students must say the card word in a sentence before keeping it.
5. Sorting Challenge 🗂️
- Spread cards out face-up.
- Have students sort by sound position (initial, medial, final), category (food, clothing, nature), or fall theme.
- They say each card as they sort it.
6. Sentence Builders ✏️
- Students pick 3 random cards and create a silly fall sentence using all 3 words.
- Encourages higher-level practice and generalization.
7. Speed Drill ⏱️
- The teacher flips cards one by one rapidly.
- Students say each word as fast (but accurately!) as possible.
- Fun for timed practice or small group races.

🎁 Free Articulation Resource: Fall Playing Cards for /F & F Blends/ and /L & L Blends/

💬 Fall-Themed Language Resource: Putting the Research Into Action
Last time, we looked at how syntax intervention helps students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) through explicit teaching, multimodal supports, and structured grammar activities. (👉 Want to jump straight to the syntax research summary on explicit grammatical intervention? Click Right Here!)
Now let’s take that research one step further with a fall-themed complete sentences resource that makes it simple to apply evidence-based strategies in your therapy sessions.
🧠 Why It Works
According to Balthazar et al. (2020), students with DLD make greater progress when they’re given explicit instruction and repeated opportunities to practice grammar in meaningful contexts. By targeting sentence structure directly, we give our students the tools they need to build complete sentences that carry over into conversation, reading, and writing.
This free resource does exactly that:
- Provides scaffolded opportunities to strengthen syntax and sentence-building skills.
- Uses fall-themed speech therapy activities to keep students motivated.
- Offers structured practice that supports both receptive and expressive language goals.

💡 Why This Matters in Therapy
As SLPs, we know grammar practice doesn’t stick if it’s only done in isolation. But when students expand short responses into complete sentences using seasonal prompts, those skills become functional, meaningful, and memorable.
This fall language activity for SLPs makes it easy to:
- Support sentence structure speech therapy goals in a playful way.
- Reinforce the syntax intervention research from last time.
- Build stronger expressive language and carryover into the classroom.

🎁 Free Language Resource: Fall-Themed Complete Sentences
This freebie is designed to help your students practice syntax, grammar, and sentence structure with engaging fall visuals and prompts.
Inside, you’ll find:
- 🍎 Scaffolded sentence-building worksheets across multiple levels.
🍁 Fall-themed visuals to support expressive and receptive language goals.
🗣️ Opportunities for repetition, expansion, and carryover into conversation.
⏱️ Ready-to-go materials that save you prep time while keeping therapy research-based.
It’s flexible, fun, and easy to use for:
- 👥 Perfect for small groups, mixed groups, or 1:1 therapy sessions.
📚 Supports academic language development in meaningful, engaging contexts.
🍂 Practice syntax goals through fun, seasonal, and motivating fall-themed activities.

Curious about the research that inspired this complete sentences activity? Let’s recap the evidence-based research on syntax intervention so you can see exactly how it connects! Check it out below!
🎯 Our Focus: Syntax in Speech Therapy
This week, we’re diving into syntax intervention — the structure behind how students put words together to form complete sentences. Strong syntax skills are the backbone of communication and academic success, yet they’re often tricky for students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).
When we focus on sentence structure speech therapy and build skills through complete sentences speech therapy activities, we’re giving students tools that help them in every subject, not just language arts.
🔬 Evidence-Based Research Spotlight
This week’s research spotlight comes from:
“Explicit Grammatical Intervention for Developmental Language Disorder: Three Approaches” (Balthazar, Ebbels, & Zwitserlood, 2020).
📖 Read the full article here on PubMed:
Explicit Grammatical Intervention for Developmental Language Disorder: Three Approaches
The article highlights three approaches that fall under evidence-based speech therapy:
- ✔️MetaTaal
- ✔️SHAPE CODING™
- ✔️Complex Sentence Intervention
All three emphasize:
- ✔️Explicit metalinguistic instruction
✔️Clear stimulus organization
✔️Multimodal learning strategies
👉 In other words, these are truly evidence-based grammar activities that can help our students make real progress.

🔑 Key Takeaways for SLPs
Here are the biggest lessons from the research — and how they connect to your fall speech therapy activities this month:
- 🟡 Evidence-based speech therapy matters. Children with DLD benefit most when we use explicit grammatical intervention rooted in evidence-based research speech therapy practices rather than guessing or relying on worksheets without proven impact.
- 🟡 Syntax intervention for DLD is powerful. By focusing on syntax speech therapy activities, we help students master how words combine into complete sentences — a skill tied directly to reading, writing, and academic success.
- 🟡 Explicit teaching is essential. Students learn grammar rules faster when SLPs provide explicit instruction paired with syntax intervention speech therapy strategies like visual coding, sentence frames, or structured practice.
- 🟡 Sentence structure = confidence. Incorporating sentence structure speech therapy activities and fall-themed sentence activities allows students to practice in fun, seasonal ways while still hitting therapy goals.
- 🟡 Multimodal = memorable. Combining visual supports, movement, and auditory cues creates grammar activities for speech therapy that stick. Think: highlighting words with color, building sentences with Legos, or sorting fall vocabulary cards into syntax categories.
- 🟡 Consistency is key. Regularly scheduling language intervention speech therapy sessions that revisit targets ensures students retain what they’ve learned. Consistent exposure is especially effective when paired with fall language activities for SLPs.
- 🟡 Free resources can save hours. Printable tools like free syntax worksheets for speech therapy or printable fall speech therapy resources let you spend less time prepping and more time engaging with students.
🧠 Application in Therapy
Here are a few simple ways you can put this research into action with your students right away:
- ➡️ Explicit sentence practice → Use color coding, sentence frames, or even fall-themed picture prompts to target sentence structure speech therapy goals.
- ➡️ Hands-on syntax activities → Try fall language activities for SLPs like building sentences with leaves, pumpkins, or themed vocabulary cards to keep students engaged.
- ➡️ Multimodal supports → Pair grammar activities for speech therapy with visuals, movement, and repetition to strengthen understanding and retention.
- ➡️ Consistent intervention → Schedule regular sessions using syntax speech therapy activities that reinforce complete sentences, schema-building, and grammatical rules.
Pair these strategies with our free syntax worksheets for speech therapy to save prep time and keep your sessions research-aligned.

💛 Why This Matters
When we focus on syntax intervention using evidence-based speech therapy strategies, we’re giving students the building blocks they need to communicate clearly and confidently. Strong syntax and complete sentence skills are directly tied to academic success — from reading comprehension to written expression.
And when we, as SLPs, ground our therapy in evidence-based research, we’re not only saving time but ensuring that every activity — from fall-themed sentence practice to grammar activities for speech therapy — is meaningful and effective.
These syntax speech therapy activities aren’t just worksheets to fill time; they’re tools proven to improve comprehension, boost language growth, and help our students thrive in and out of the classroom.
