Winter is here! Has it snowed where you are yet? I think winter time is the perfect time to relax with a sweet story and work through some winter book companions with your students for your next speech therapy activities! Let’s make your planning a breeze this winter with our winter speech therapy book companion.
Literacy-based speech therapy has lots of benefits when it comes to language therapy, working on target words, including fun narrative themes, story comprehension, and more. I loved using some of my students favorite seasonal story books and incorporating a winter book companion into our speech therapy sessions. So many books have fun winter themes, and I have started to find more and more free resources for speech therapy book companions.
Today we have created a winter literacy-based therapy lesson plan for YOU! We created a fun story companion to go with the book Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. I am sure you have heard of this book before – it is a great book to use in your winter speech sessions, and I was finding so many therapy ideas to work on through this story!
We also have created Wh-Questions Flash Cards with a snow day theme to go along with our speech therapy book companion. We hope these wh question picture cards help you meet some language development goals with your students in a fun and engaging way!

Why Use Book Companions in Your Speech Room
Let’s take a quick and closer look at why winter book companions like this are such a great way to support our speech students with language impairments!
Book companions are beneficial for speech therapy for several reasons:
- Contextual Learning: They provide a rich context for language use, helping children develop a range of skills such as descriptive vocabulary, target articulation, story grammar, sentence formulation, and other language activities!
- Engagement: Storytelling captures children’s attention, making them more motivated to participate in activities related to the book. Feel free to use interactive books!
- Targeted Vocabulary: They allow a speech therapist to introduce specific vocabulary and sounds in a structured way, making it easier to practice articulation.
- Comprehension Skills: Book companions can help improve listening and comprehension skills as children discuss the story and its characters.
- Repetition: Reading repetitive text reinforces language patterns, phonemic awareness, and pronunciation.
- Visual Support: Illustrations in the book can aid understanding and retention of new words and concepts. Get creative and use sensory bins if applicable!
- Creative Expression: They encourage children to express themselves through basic concepts, retelling, acting out scenes, or creating their own story strip, enhancing their language skills.
