Teaching Context Clues in Speech Therapy: A Free Chart & Tier 2 Word Activity
Teaching vocabulary can feel tricky—especially when students hit an unfamiliar word and immediately freeze or guess. That’s where context clues become such an important skill in speech therapy and classroom instruction.
When our students learn how to look around a word—rather than skipping it or asking for help right away—they start building stronger vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and academic language skills. These skills are so essential and will bridge to many more skills. Context Clues is one of the skills that I LOVE to see “click” with my students!
Last week, we shared a deep dive into the evidence-based research behind teaching context clues and why explicit instruction matters. If you want to explore the research side of things, you can read that post HERE. (+ Grab an Amazing EBR Key Findings Chart to help guide your planning!)
This week, we’re taking the next step: turning that research into practical, student-friendly practice with a free context clues resource you can use right away! This is a print and go resource, so download it below and use it today (or next week!)

Why Context Clues Matter in Speech Therapy
Context clues are a powerful compensatory strategy for students who struggle with vocabulary, language processing, or inferencing. Instead of memorizing isolated word lists, students learn to:
- – Identify clues within the text
- – Infer word meaning using surrounding information
- – Apply that strategy across reading, writing, and conversation
For many students—especially those working on Tier 2 vocabulary—this kind of explicit, guided instruction makes vocabulary learning feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

To support this skill, we created a free context clues chart and worksheet set designed specifically for speech therapy and small-group instruction.

What’s Included in the Free Rainbow Themed Context Clue Packet?
This resource was designed with the research in mind. First, anchor your students with clear, simple examples of types of context clues. Then put that to work – practice reading sentences and identifying the context clue that leads to them knowing what the target Tier 2 Word Means. These two key parts work together.
1. Context Clues Anchor Chart
The chart teaches students to ask the right questions when they see an unfamiliar word:
- Definition clues – Has the author told us what the word means?
- Word clues – Do prefixes, suffixes, or root words help?
- Sentence clues – Are there synonyms or antonyms nearby?
- Example clues – Did the author give examples to explain more?
This makes the abstract idea of “use context clues” much more concrete for students.
2. Context Clues Worksheets for Guided Practice
Each worksheet gives students:
- A sentence with a target Tier 2 word
- Multiple-choice definition options
- A prompt to highlight or underline the context clue they used
Students don’t just pick a definition—they have to prove how they figured it out, which strengthens comprehension and metacognitive skills.

How to Use This Resource in Speech Therapy
Here’s an easy way to structure a session using this material:
- Introduce the anchor chart
Review the four types of context clues and model how to look for them in a sentence. - Read the sentence together
Encourage students to slow down and notice what information surrounds the unfamiliar word. - Highlight the context clue
Students underline or highlight the words that helped them determine meaning. - Decide on the definition
Students choose the best definition based on the clue type they identified. - Talk it through
Ask students to explain why they chose that meaning—great for expressive language and reasoning.
Because the examples use weather and rainbow vocabulary (gentle, intense, scattered, visible, predictable, sudden), the language feels familiar and accessible while still targeting academic vocabulary.

Why This Works for Tier 2 Vocabulary Instruction
This approach supports:
- Explicit vocabulary instruction
- Inferencing strategies
- Reading comprehension skills
- Independent word-solving strategies
Instead of guessing, students learn a repeatable process they can carry into classroom reading, testing situations, and real-world language use.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teaching Context Clues in Speech Therapy
What are context clues in speech therapy?
Context clues are words or phrases within a sentence or passage that help students figure out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. In speech therapy, teaching context clues supports vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and inferencing—especially for students working on Tier 2 vocabulary.
What types of context clues should students learn first?
Most students benefit from starting with the most common types of context clues:
- Definition clues
- Synonym and antonym clues
- Example clues
These clue types are easy to spot in text and work well for explicit instruction and guided practice in speech therapy.
Why are context clues important for Tier 2 vocabulary?
Tier 2 words often appear across academic texts but aren’t always directly taught. Context clues give students a strategy for figuring out word meaning independently, which helps build academic language and reduces reliance on memorization.
How do you teach context clues in speech therapy sessions?
A simple approach is to:
- Read the sentence together
- Identify the type of context clue used
- Highlight or underline the clue in the text
- Use that clue to determine the word’s meaning
This structured routine helps students internalize the strategy and apply it across different texts.
What age or grade levels are best for this context clues resource?
This context clues chart and worksheet set works well for upper elementary and early middle school students, especially those receiving speech therapy for language, vocabulary, or comprehension goals. The weather and rainbow theme also makes it a great fit for spring-themed lessons.
Can this be used outside of speech therapy?
Yes! While the resource was designed with speech therapy in mind, it also works well for small groups, classroom vocabulary instruction, intervention blocks, and homework practice.
Is this context clues activity aligned with evidence-based practice?
Yes. This resource was created to support explicit vocabulary instruction and strategy-based learning, which are key components of evidence-based reading and language intervention. You can also explore the research behind this approach in our previous post on context clues.
