Look no further for free printable resources to teach children wh questions. The best part of wh questions is you can work on them in the classroom, at home, or even out and about! So, look below for the best wh questions speech therapy activities.

This blog post includes 197+ wh questions ideas that you can use to teach your child or student wh questions, such as using a picture scene, boom cards, question cards, and more!

Type of Question

There are 6 different question word types to practice.

Here are 6 typical question examples of the different types of wh words.

  • Who is a question about a person. “Who is your teacher?”
  • What is a question about a thing. “What kind of car is that?”
  • When is a question about time. “When is the school play?”
  • Where is a question about a place. “Where is the classroom?”
  • Why is a question about reasons. “Why are you late?”
  • How is a question about method (in what way), degree (to what extent), or condition. “How is your brother doing?”

Easiest Questions

Children typically learn wh questions in order from more concrete questions, such as “what” being the first question to be acquired and then moving on to the “who” and “where” questions.

The questions “when” and “why” are later developing questions with “why” being the most difficult to learn.

How to Teach Question Forms

  • Gather a Baseline: Speech-Language Pathologists will start by getting a baseline of the students verbal skills by testing the child’s ability to answer the different types of questions.
  • Easiest Questions First: A great way to practice is to start with the easiest type of wh question first, which are “what”, “who”, and “where”. Once those are mastered you can then move on to the hardest questions which are “when”, “how” and “why”.
  • One Question Type at a Time: Try to work on only one question type at a time to help increase exposure on one type of question and to avoid confusion prior to mastery. Be sure to use multiple exposures to similar questions to help the student master each question type.
  • Use Wh Question Visual Prompts: Using a wh question visual cue can help the child learn the different wh questions and associate a picture with the different definitions. Grab your free wh question visual page here.
  • Modeling Correct Answers: The right way to model correct answers is if you ask your child or student a question and they don’t know the answer, then try modeling the correct answer for them. For example, “What is your middle name?” Modeling – “Your middle name is Edward.” You can then go one step further and ask the child or student the question again to see if they can now give the correct answer. For example, “What is your middle name?” Child – “My middle name is Edward.”
  • Practice with Multiple Resources: It is important to practice wh questions with multiple different resources, such as during a fun boom card game, during a short story, or while watching a short video clip. You want the child or student to be able to answer questions not just using one type of material, but across multiple different resource types.
  • Practice in Multiple Settings: In addition to the suggestion above it is important to practice in multiple settings as well. So can the student answer “what” questions in the therapy room, in their classroom, on recess, and at home?

Wh Question Goal Ideas

If a child experiences a language delay and needs special education to work on wh questions here are a few IEP goals for speech pathologists to use when working with a student working on wh questions speech therapy activities.

  • Story or Reading Comprehension: Given a story, STUDENT will answer WH questions (i.e., who, what, when, where, why, how) with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
  • Activity or Assignment: Given an activity or assignment, STUDENT will answer WH questions (i.e., who, what, when, where, why, how) about that activity or assignment with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
  • Discussion or Conversation: Given a classroom discussion or conversation, STUDENT will answer WH questions (i.e., who, what, when, where, why, how) about that discussion or conversation with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.

Developmental Goal

The ability to ask and answer questions is a key part of language development and of a child’s typical development.

Developmental Milestones by Age:

  • 1 – 2 year olds: From the ages of one to two a child can begin to answer “where” questions by pointing to an object. For example, “Where is your teddy bear.” The child can then answer the “where” question by pointing to their teddy bear.
  • 2 – 3 year olds: In this age group the average child can begin to answer “what” and “where” and “who” questions with more than just pointing. For example, “What animal likes ice?” “A polar bear.” At this age children can also begin to ask these same question types. For example, “Where I going?” (This is my son’s favorite question right now whenever I put on his coat.” – aged 2.10 years old) Although it’s not a complete sentence, the child is appropriately using the “where” question to ask “Where am I going?”. At this age the child is also beginning to express their own wants when asked “what” questions, such as “What do you want for a snack?” the child might respond with, “I want fruit snack”.
