As a speech-language pathologist or audiologist, you may be familiar with a time when it was almost New Years and you were running around your house or office trying to track down all of your Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

So, if you’re anything like me, then you forgot it’s the end of your 3 year maintenance interval, the time period during which you must accumulate your CEUs, and your hours are due, like now!

I don’t know how I manage to space it every single time, but I do.

Luckily for you and me, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) does not require you to turn in your specific course hours.

That is unless you are audited, of course!

Instead, you simply need to report the total number of hours completed for that 3 year interval.

With that in mind even though you might not need to send them in every 3 years you always want to be prepared in case you do get audited.

That’s why I’ve gone ahead and created a simple and easy to use ASHA CEU tracker in Google Sheets. This user-friendly tool allows you to easily manage and track the CEUs you’ve earned, ensuring you’re up to date with all your hours and the latest industry requirements.

I created this ASHA CEU Tracker as a way to help other SLPs and audiologists monitor their progress toward maintaining their ASHA certification as well as meet all of the required maintenance standards.

By using this ASHA CEU Tracker you, and I, can hopefully avoid that last minute scramble dance of digging through our files in order to stay ahead of our upcoming certification deadlines.

Understanding ASHA CEUs

Role of Education Courses and Hours

Education hours play a crucial role in your professional development as a speech language pathologist or audiologist. They are the measure of your investment in learning and enhancing your skills.

Typically, a single education hour equates to one hour of instructional time.

ASHA requires its certified members to accumulate a specific number of education hours through various continuing education (CE) activities.

The Concept of Education Units

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has developed a system called Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to track and manage education hours. One ASHA CEU is equivalent to 10 education hours. This conversion makes it easier for you, as a professional, to track your progress and ensure you are meeting the continuing education requirement to maintain your certification.

Our ASHA CEU Tracker simplifies the process of managing your accumulated CEUs from various courses and activities. The tracker can help you monitor your progress and ensure you fulfill the ASHA standards.

In order to not have to run around scrambling at the last minute it is helpful to keep up with your continuous professional development. ASHA CEUs provide a comprehensive system to track your progress, ensuring you maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in your field as speech pathologists.

Navigating the ASHA Certification

Certificate of Clinical Competence

To achieve the ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), you must fulfill specific academic and professional requirements. By obtaining your CCCs, you demonstrate your dedication and commitment to professional excellence in your field.

To pursue the ASHA certification, ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • Complete a graduate degree from an accredited program in your chosen discipline
  • Successfully complete a clinical fellowship:
    • This includes a minimum of 1,260 hours of professional experience under the supervision of an ASHA-certified professional in your discipline
  • Pass the national Praxis examination relevant to your specialty

Official Transcript

Your official transcript is an essential document in the CCC application process. It serves as a record of your academic achievements and verifies that you have completed the required coursework in your discipline. Ensure that your official transcript includes the following information:

  • Name of the educational institution
  • Degree earned (specifying the discipline)
  • Date the degree was conferred

To apply for ASHA certification, you must submit your official transcript directly from your educational institution to ASHA. This ensures the authenticity of your transcript and keeps the application process unbiased.

Remember to keep track of your professional development with the ASHA Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Tracker. This tool helps you monitor your CEUs and ensures you meet the recertification requirements to maintain your CCCs and uphold the high professional standards set by ASHA.

Earning Your CEUs

Online Course

There are numerous ASHA-approved CE providers that offer a wide range of online courses to earn your CEUs. These courses allow you to learn at your own pace, enabling you to plan your schedule accordingly.

In order to successfully complete a course, you need to fulfill the course requirements, which may vary depending on the provider. One of the advantages of online learning is the flexibility to obtain CE hours by fitting the courses around your daily life.

Virtual Conferences

Another effective method to earn CEUs is by attending virtual conferences organized by ASHA or ASHA-approved CE providers. These conferences typically feature numerous sessions led by industry professionals and cover various industry-related topics.

Attending these sessions can help you expand your knowledge and stay current with the latest developments in the field. As you attend the virtual conferences, you’ll earn CE hours that count towards your certification maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I calculate my ASHA CEUs?

To calculate your ASHA CEUs, divide the total number of learning hours by 10. For example, if you have completed 20 hours, your CEUs would be 2.0 (20/10). Remember, 1 CEU equals 10 hours of instructional time. Always round down to the nearest half hour to accurately calculate your CEU total.

Where can I find my ASHA CEU transcript?

You can access your ASHA CEU transcript by logging into your account on the ASHA website. Once logged in, click on “My Account” and then “View/Print My Transcript.” By doing so, you’ll have access to your complete CEU history, including courses you’ve attended and the corresponding CEUs earned.

What are the requirements to become ASHA CE providers?

If you want to become one of ASHA Approved CE Providers, you must be an organization with a demonstrated history of offering quality continuing education (CE) opportunities. Applicants must submit a detailed application and undergo a review process by ASHA to ensure the CE offerings align with ASHA’s guidelines and standards. For more information, visit the ASHA Continuing Education Provider website.

How can I convert my CEU hours for ASHA?

If you have earned CEUs from another organization, you can submit them for approval with ASHA. First, make sure the course meets ASHA’s requirements for acceptable CE activity. Then, complete the necessary forms to verify attendance, course content, and learning outcomes. ASHA will convert the CEUs based on their standards and add them to your transcript.

What is the timeline for submitting ASHA CEUs?

It’s essential to submit your ASHA CEUs promptly, as regulations may vary by state and licensing board. Generally, you should report your CEUs within 45 days after completing a course. Some CE Providers may submit your CEUs directly to ASHA on your behalf. If this is the case, allow 4-6 weeks for processing. For self-submitted CEUs, use ASHA’s online CE Registry, and allow 4-6 weeks for processing and transcript updates.
