Have you ever looked at your caseload and thought, “How on earth am I supposed to see all these students?”

Same.

When I was a school-based SLP, I had 115 students on my caseload. (Yes, you read that right!) There were days I’d sit at my desk, staring at my schedule, trying to figure out how to stretch myself just a little bit further without completely burning out.

Then one day, I noticed something: a big chunk of my students were all in the same classroom.

So I popped in to chat with their teacher and said, “What if I came into your class once a week and we co-taught the lesson together?”

That single conversation changed everything.

Instead of pulling students out one by one, I started doing push-in speech therapy sessions. The teacher and I worked together to plan lessons, I set up small-group centers, and each student got exactly what they needed — all within the classroom. The teacher loved it (one less class to plan!), and I loved that I could support so many of my students at once.

That experience became the foundation for how I now design every resource inside the Speech Therapy Store Membership — ready-made, differentiated speech therapy materials that make push-in, small-group, and co-teaching sessions simple, engaging, and stress-free.

🧠 Why Push-In Speech Therapy Works

Running speech therapy in the classroom isn’t just efficient — it’s powerful. Here’s why so many SLPs are shifting toward this collaborative speech therapy model:

💬 Builds collaboration and carryover: When you co-teach, students see speech and language skills applied in real classroom contexts, and teachers can reinforce them all week long.

🌈 Supports inclusion: Push-in speech therapy helps students participate fully with peers — no missing instruction, no extra transitions.

📚 Encourages generalization: Skills practiced in classroom-based speech therapy are learned where they’ll actually be used.

⏱️ Saves time and prevents caseload creep: One whole-class speech therapy lesson can serve multiple goals and students at once.

🔍 Provides pre-referral support: Push-in sessions are a powerful way to collect data and provide pre-referral speech therapy support for students who might need extra help before being formally added to your caseload.

💛 This approach aligns perfectly with a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and RTI frameworks — providing Tier 1 and Tier 2 services that prevent overload and strengthen classroom collaboration for SLPs.

🏫 How to Structure a Push-In Speech Therapy Lesson

Ready to try your own push-in speech therapy activities? There’s no one “right” way to structure a session, but here are two simple formats I’ve found to be the most effective.

🎥 Watch the video below: I walk you through exactly how I use the Speech Therapy Store Membership to plan my co-teaching lessons — from anchor themes to activity rotations.

✏️ Option 1: By Activity or Center

Create 3–4 speech therapy centers around the room. Each one can focus on a specific skill — for example:

  • Center 1: Vocabulary & comprehension
  • Center 2: Grammar & storytelling
  • Center 3: Speech sound practice
  • Center 4: Extension, mindfulness, or craft activity

You can rotate between the groups or stay at one station for targeted instruction.

(This structure works beautifully with the membership’s tiered monthly themes — every activity aligns to the same story or topic, just at differentiated levels.)

📖 Option 2: By Level or Tiered Table

Group students by reading or language level — like Level 1, 1B, and 1C.
Each group works on the same co-teaching speech therapy skill but with their own differentiated speech therapy materials that meet them where they are.

This makes it easy to collect data in speech therapy and see which students need Tier 3 intervention later.

(And since the membership already includes each resource at multiple levels, there’s zero prep time — just print or open the version you need.)

💡 The Four Key Tips for Successful Push-In Therapy

These are the same four steps I share in my trainings and videos — they’re simple, practical, and make push-in speech therapy lesson plans feel doable.

1️⃣ Start with a Core Theme

Each month inside the membership, you’ll find a nonfiction article and fictional story set across three reading levels. These serve as your anchor for whole-class speech therapy lessons, so everyone participates in the same concept while working at their level.

2️⃣ Structure by Activity or Level

Decide whether your class will rotate through speech therapy center ideas or stay in small tiered tables grouped by skill. Both approaches support collaborative speech therapy and allow for flexibility.

3️⃣ Connect to MTSS or RTI

Align your push-in model with the multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) by embedding Tier 1 (whole class), Tier 2 (small group), and Tier 3 (targeted) interventions. This helps identify who benefits from small-group reinforcement — and who may need formal services.

(You can read more about this alignment and research in our post on evidence-based research and embedded vocabulary instruction.)

4️⃣ Reflect and Adjust

After your session, take a few minutes to record observations. Which students needed extra prompting? Who exceeded expectations? Over time, these notes make your speech therapy lesson planning smoother — and your data collection in speech therapy even more accurate.

(If you’re a member, don’t forget to use the built-in data tracking sheets that make this part quick and interactive!)
